Boneyard, or Blackrock, Beach is one of the most unique and beautiful locations in Florida. Tucked away in the Northeast region near Jacksonville you will find a place like no other on Big Talbot Island State Park.

The defining feature of Boneyard Beach is the dramatic landscape of ancient wind torn cedar and oak trees. Also the Black "rock" which is actually hardened spodosol soil formations.

Dark trees against moody clouds.

These tree skeletons dominate the beach and range in size from small to huge, towering over 40ft tall. The location truly feels otherworldly.

Time Your Visit

If you do visit this iconic location the best time to visit and explore Boneyard Beach is during low tide. This exposes the most amount of driftwood skeletons along the landscape. They litter the coast from the forest out into the ocean and create endless compositions to experiment with. It is a very enjoyable experience.

Wear the right stuff

Wear appropriate footwear for the moderate hike. There are several ways to access the beach and they all require some walking on semi-rough terrain for a little while. Also consider bugs and heat or cold depending on the time of year. Wear layers that you can easily take on and off for protection against the elements.

Bring a few extras

While it doesn't take too long to access the beaches, you may want to take a few things along to make your trip more pleasant. A little bug spray and a few snacks would be welcomed during a 2-4 hour trip.

Remember to leave no trace

This is a leave no trace location so please be sure to pack out anything that you brought in. Recently there have been, how can I say, unwelcome behavior here. This is not a place to go lounge at the beach and dig holes. It is a sacred location and should be respected. So please take care if you do visit, which I fully encourage!

How to get there

I access the beach from the Blackrock Beach Parking Lot on the Jimmy Buffet Memorial Parkway. Google maps link - click here.

Wether you are looking to capture the perfect landscape photo or just hike along this ancient beach that is like no other place, Boneyard Beach is truly an amazing experience for anyone looking for something different.
