I Was Not Expecting This! St. Augustine Pier!

When I headed out to the St. Augustine Pier for this episode of "This Is Florida" I thought I was in for a boring clear sky blue bird sunrise. Instead I walked into some of the most amazing conditions I have ever seen on Anastasia Island. A thick fog hung around all morning and completely transformed the landscape.

The predictions were for thick fog in the morning, but when I woke up there was no fog to be found. As I made the drive over to Anastasia Island there was still no fog to be seen. As I made my way around the last bend on A1A right before the St. Johns County Ocean Pier and Park the fog began to appear.

As I pulled into the parking lot, all of the sudden, the fog sitting over the beach and pier was crazy! Guess today was our lucky day!

I arrived with plenty of time for sunrise so I started off shooting a few blue hours shots with the Belt of Venus colors softly changing tones as the sun began to rise on the horizon.

I was the first person out there, but soon about 25 other people showed up for the amazing sunrise. As the sun came up and shined through the thick fog, light rays wrapped around the pilings and made for some truly amazing conditions.

What a glorious morning! We kept shooting as the sun came up and get some excellent photos for my upcoming book about all the spots along A1A. Check out the gallery at the end for all the photos I took.

After the sun came and we got tons of great shots of the pier the fog was still hanging around. So I made my way down to the dunes at Anastasia Island State Park. The fog was so thick still that everything looked like it was painted in real life, it was so cool.

We spent another couple hours wandering the dunes and playing with compositions and light. I also experimented with some closer detail shots of the soft light against the wind swept dune lines. It was an amazing morning in St. Augustine and I'm glad I didn't let the lack of fog at home and on the way over deter me!

Check out the full photo gallery below to see all the photos and check out my This Is Florida series on YouTube where I am traveling the full length of A1A documenting the best photography spots for a book. All while sleeping in my car and exploring everything i can find along the way! Be sure to subscribe!
