1. Master Bulb and Time Modes
Standard camera settings usually cap your shutter speed at 30 seconds. To capture ultra smooth water or moving storm clouds, you need to push past this limit.
Switch to Bulb Mode (B): This keeps the shutter open for as long as you hold the remote button down.
Calculate time: Use a long exposure calculator app, such as the one included with Photopills, to get your bulb exposures just right.
Use a locking cable release: This prevents your finger from causing camera shake during extremely long exposures.

2. Time Your Shots with Environmental Movement
Long exposures rely entirely on motion to create visual interest. Match your shutter speed to the speed of your surroundings.
Pace the wind: Fast moving storm clouds need shorter exposures than slow, clearer day skies.
Track the tides: Shoot receding ocean waves to capture long, streaky white foam lines pulling into the sea as the tide draws out. Or utilize the high tide push for cascading water.

Consider square systems: Use a 100mm or 150mm square filter holder system to keep rims well out of view for the widest lenses.

4. Use Focus Stacking for Front to Back Sharpness

Dark Neutral Density (ND) filters make it impossible to see through the viewfinder or guess manual exposures.
Take a base test shot: Establish a perfect manual exposure without the dark filter attached.
Skip the mental math: Use mobile apps like PhotoPills or the Lee Filters Stopper Exposure App to calculate the new shutter speed.
Input variables accurately: Plug in your base shutter speed and your ND filter strength to get your correct shutter time.

8. Blend Multiple Exposures in Post-Processing
High contrast scenes often feature skies that are too bright and foregrounds that are too dark for a single exposure.
